Studer & openHAB, a combination with a full range of open possibilities

The systems today are becoming more and more connected, communication plays a key role for the integration of smart devices in smart systems. At Studer we develop high quality power electronics while you implement smart energy solutions. Continuing the development of our Open Studer platform we are committed to provide you with the openness required to fully unleash the potential of communication, facilitating the integration of Studer devices in complex and customized system architectures.

We have already shared an example of the Studer Modbus RTU implementation with a Siemens PLC and the Studer Python library for your Modbus developments. Today we would like to share with you our latest integration, the binding of Studer Modbus into the openHAB platform.

openHAB, the center of your smart home

We’re living in the world of the “Smart Home”, consumers are starting to outfit their homes with connected lights, EV, heat pump, cameras, inverter, thermostats, garage doors…the list goes on and on.

The open Home Automation Bus (openHAB, pronounced ˈəʊpənˈhæb) is an open source, technology agnostic home automation platform which runs as the center of your smart home!

Some of openHAB’s strengths are:

  • Ability to integrate a multitude of other devices and systems. openHAB includes other home automation systems, (smart) devices and other technologies into a single solution
  • Provide a uniform user interface and a common approach to automation rules across the entire system, regardless of the number of manufacturers and sub-systems involved
  • Giving you the most flexible tool available to make almost any home automation wish come true; if you can think it, odds are that you can implement it with openHAB.

Binding of Modbus Studer into openHAB

We’re proud to announce the compatibility and integration of Studer devices inside the binding’s list of openHAB. From now you can build your own solution for monitoring using the Xcom-485i, the accessory needed for the communication between your Studer  system and openHAB’s binding based on modbus RTU. openHAB can be executed on different versions of macOS and Windows and many different variants of Linux (Ubuntu, Raspbian, …).

Do you want to get your hands on?

We have installed openHAB in a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and implemented the Studer modbus binding, making possible to develop your own monitoring solution integrating Studer devices into your smart home openHAB platform.

You could find here our documentation to take the first steps into this powerful and opensource home automation platform. A tutorial for install openHAB in your Raspberry and use the Modbus binding for communicating with Studer’s devices.

For this implementation example you may need the following system requirements:

  • OpenHAB Version 2.5.9 or later
  • Xcom-485 V 1.6.82 (r672) or later

We believe that these tools are helpful for your smart energy systems and we are looking forward to seeing your new monitoring solutions with Studer devices and openHAB.
